The Process of Orthodontics

When the need for orthodontics arises, the first step is always carrying out a panoramic X-ray, to make the orthodontist aware of the exact position and condition of each tooth. It is also essential for the specialist to be able to plan the whole process precisely. After that, a mould is made of the teeth, then, the orthodontist takes photographs of the whole mouth to document the process along the way. After that, the patient and the specialist pick the most suitable orthodontic appliance. Finally, the appliance is placed, and followed by regular check-ups and alignments for the length of the procedure.

Types of Orthodontic Appliances – A Great Variety of Choices

Based on the degree of abnormality, age of the patient and price, there are many orthodontic appliances to choose from. Below we discuss some of the most widespread methods.

Conventional braces

Thanks to their efficiency and reasonable price, these are the most popular solutions when it comes to orthodontics. They are suitable to treat even great unevenness of the teeth. Their only disadvantage is the appearance of their metal brackets. Newer technologies, however, use sapphire or porcelain brackets instead of metal, making these appliances more natural looking, but also more expensive at the same time.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are just like conventional ones, except that they are placed on the inner side of the teeth, making them practically invisible. The method of their placement and the whole orthodontic process is very much like in the case of conventional braces, the only difference is the place of brackets. Because they are placed close to the tongue, they might interfere with the patient’s speech. Their other disadvantage is that they cannot be used for all types of unevenness, and the orthodontic process becomes slower when applying this technique.

Invisible braces

Invisible brace represent the high-tech of adult orthodontics. They are a set of computer-made clear plastic aligners, which must usually be worn for one or two years. Invisible braces are imperceptible, and are removed when eating or washing teeth, providing comfort and efficient oral hygiene throughout the whole process. Their only drawback is their price, and the fact that they are unsuitable for treating serious unevenness.
